Used FLA Batteries

Post by eesiason »

Is there a good forum beyond the obvious FB Marketplace / eBay to list used batteries? My 10 year old 860 amp hour Deka Maintenance Saver bank still has a lot of life in it, but we have outgrown it and my new 1600 amp hour set will be here in October. Thinking there is someone somewhere that would love to have them more than the recycler...

My RE system: GS8048A, FM80 w/3,600W PV Fixed, FM80 w/2,700W on Zomeworks tracker, Mate3, 24 Trojan 2V L16 1100AH @ C20, Grid-Tied with Kohler 14RESA LPG Generator and MEP-803 Diesel if needed.

I install and maintain grid-tied and off-grid systems in my area and consult on solar system design/operation.

It has got to be someone local that can afford to pick them up so FB marketplace, eBay, Craigslist, etc. in your community is best option.

With your 16 kW of panels, I doubt your batteries were ever in a partial state of charge.

I often deal with old time off-grid customers who have big battery banks and too few panels as the panels were $10-20/watt. Currently upgrading one customer that had a 24V 1,800 AH FLA battery bank (8 parallel strings) and 1,000W of panels. He is getting a new LFP battery and another 3,000W of panels and asked if he could turn on more lights at night.

Oh my. 1000 watts trying to fill 1800 AH? We built this place in 2012 to run as close to a "normal" house as possible. So enough solar for the shortest day of the winter. Enough umph to run 5 mini-splits and everything else in the summer. The only thing we don't run at night is the electric dryer and more than two mini-splits.

"This place" has just grown much bigger than we ever thought it would so my initial spend on batteries was inadequate. And you are correct. The batteries entered the evening at 100% about 99% of days.

FB Marketplace and eBay it is. Listing coming soon in New England.

My original L16's just weren't doing their job after 4.5 years and due for changeout before winter. Worth $35 per core times eight but there were no bad cells and only a few weak ones. I put an ad in the local small town newspaper for all or none in the <$500 sales column for free. I got an immediate call from a guy who had no money but he thought to trade 500' of Red Brand 5' non-climb fence. Instant done deal and was great for both of us and saved my a full day trip to the city. It's worth a try isn't it?
