FX2524MT Trips GFCI Dock Pedestal

Post by CDrive »

More often than not my inverter trips dock power pedestals with GFCI breakers which forces me to bypass.

It is not consistent though. Recently I was plugged into shore power for 4 days before the GFCI tripped and I had to bypass.

After reviewing the manual I am wondering if there is a problem with the neutral-ground switching capability in my unit?

Thanks >> Joe

The "M" series does have neutral-ground bond switching that opens upon AC Input.
However, the general advice is not to provide AC Input to the inverter via a GFCI protected circuit.
Also, is the pedestal circuit GFCI, or GFCI/AFCI?

Thanks for the reply.

Not sure about GFCI/AFCI. The breaker I am on now is labelled GFR480-1.

Having to deal with these newer pedestals is becoming more common as marinas upgrade.

Do the newer inverters have this same issue?

The most active vendor in the mobile/marine arena is Victron. I've noticed on their community site, several mentions of an AC input isolation transformer, and assume that's partly to address such an issue.
I would suspect feeding an inverter grid input via AFCI or GFCI is going to have this result with a broad range of manufacturer's models.

Not planning to consider a different MFR. I have been very happy with the Outback overall.

I have seen iso xfrmrs mentioned in my searches but in a severe case wouldn't they mask a potentially hazardous condition?

Mentioned Victron for the frequency of reference to this sort of issue.
Questions about marine AC safety are out of my lane. A good marine electrician should be able to help with this.
