My RE system: SYSTEM ONE:
A single, turbocharged GVFX-3648 inverter S/N 101 (includes DT kludge for generator charging); 5 kW STC of actively tracked PV; turbocharged FM80 charge controller; Hub 4; eight, Surrette FC-420 lead calcium wet cell batteries; E-Meter (Link-10); Mate3s.

SYSTEM TWO:
A single, sealed GTFX-2524 inverter; 2.0 kW STC of actively tracked PV; turbocharged FM60 charge controller; four, Surrette FC-420 lead calcium wet cell batteries; E-Meter (Link-10).

The combined inverter systems typically sell an average of 20 kWh/day.
Peak summer selling is around 40 kWh/day.
Location: Mt. Shasta, CA.

I have a vintage GVFX3648 system (S/N 101) and am considering updating from my original white Mate to a Mate3s.

I am wondering if I do this update, what kind of reprogramming will be necessary? In other words, what parameters live in the inverter and what ones live in the Mate (which would need to be written down and programmed into the new interface)?

6 SimpliPhi 3.8-48 (48v @ 75AH. 450AH total)

REC Alpha 440W panels - 2 arrays: each of 4 strings of 2 in series
2 Midnite Solar MNPV6 combiners w/20A DC disconnects.
Honda EU7000is gas fuel generator

If you look at the Mate's configuration menu tree, everything in the Inverter Menu is written to the inverter.
Things like AGS, Grid Interactive (HBX), and Global Charge parameters are in the Mate's memory.

Before making the plunge, I'd call OB Tech Support and make sure the inverter is compatible with the Mate3s.

"The mate3s may be functional in some form if it does power on but technically is not compatible with legacy FX inverters and may be damaged if connected."

I just got this question answered from Darren Emmons (who designed the 3s) via BoB Gudgel:
"yes the MATE3S did support legacy FX inverters when I left OutBack"

That makes it clear as mud!
I can't quite understand the OB Tech Support response. Unless there is something in the OB network interface on the old inverters, relative to the newer inverters/Mate3s. Even that is weak conjecture, given Darren/Bob's response.
What is driving the change? Ethernet / OpticsRE?
Will you be adding a HUB4?

What is driving the change? Ethernet / OpticsRE?
Will you be adding a HUB4?

I already have a HUB, so that should be fine. (not sure if it is a "10.3" or not, nor do know how to determine this?)

My wanting to upgrade to a Mate3s is for datalogging and remote access to monitor my system.

My wanting to upgrade to a Mate3s is for datalogging and remote access to monitor my system.
Definitely more flexible via the Ethernet interface.

- 8 (2x4) Evergreen 180's into one FM80 (2007/2020 - replaced MX60)
- 6 (2×3) ALEO S79-300's into one FM80 (2017)
- 2 grid-tied VFXR3524A-01's series stacked, replaced GVFX's (2020)
- 12 Surrette/Rolls 2V x 1766Ah (2007)
- Hub10.3, Mate3s, FNDC, RTS. Tigo ES maximizers on each PV module.

Westinghouse Solar - Barn roof: (2012)
- 24 (2x12) 235W Lightways panels with Enphase M215 microinverters plus 6 - 275W Talesun panels, also with M215s, grid-tied

Outback Skybox - Barn roof: (2019)
- 14 Trina Solar 270W in series (DC array input to SB inverter/charger), currently awaiting installation (2/19/24)
- 3 SimpliPhi 3.8 batteries, 48V, 225Ah total
- AC coupled input from 14 Talesun 275W (manually switched during outages), Enphase M215 microinverters

Battery systems operate in grid-tied, net metering w/backup mode
All self-designed and self-installed
Location: Chagrin Falls, Ohio

In July, 2019, I upgraded to a Mate3s while my GVFX inverters were still in service. This combo was in place until the GVFXs were replaced with VFXRs in November, 2020. No compatibility issues.

After an easy "plug and play" with the Mate3s and spending about an hour figuring out the mostly intuitive interface... I have to say, Outback did an amazing job with this incredible update from the old, white Mate I have been using.

Not only is the interface super easy to use, but the integration with OpticsRE via my laptop and /or the phone app are incredible. I can now monitor or configure my system remotely. It is great to have this modernization to my legacy (serial number 101) GVFX system. I should have done this years ago!
