Hi all,
Here for tips and tricks as I'm green in the area- and not the pseudo amateur, closeted expert looking for confirmation bias type of green, so suggestions are very welcomed- anyway, the Radian system at hand is used for a 48V Off Grid application and I'm looking to upgrade to 240/120V and 8048.
The set up that was here when acquired and currently being used looks like the 4048 package with a 175 breaker and 3.85kw of panels going into it.
For upgrade materials on hand I have an additional:
8x 420 W panels
FM80
Power Module replacement
Is this enough to convert to 240/120V power for larger appliances? I also found the model setting in the installer menu to switch over to 8048 after adding the second module. Is it as simple as toggling over?
Thank you in advance!
Am I ready to upgrade to 8048, 240/120V

Re: Am I ready to upgrade to 8048, 240/120V
I'm not a Radian user so don't have deep knowledge of the internals required for a conversion from a GS4048 to GS8048. However, here's some observations I've gleaned from this forum over the years:
• Outback does not recommend adding a second power module to a 4048, as it voids the UL Listing of the product. (That may or may not be important to you, but it could be to your insurance company.)
• There are three variants of the GS series: GS4048/8048, GS4048A/8048A, and GS4048A-01/8048A-01. The power supply modules (and presumedly the power FET modules) between the original and "A" series are not interchangeable. Make sure the original model is identified, and any replacement parts are compatible. (Replacement parts for the original series are hard to find these days.)
• The single-module (4048) version is 120/240V capable, but limited to 4kW output. I presume the purpose of the modification is to provide 8kW output capacity.

There are some listings for clean used Radian systems on Ebay and diysolarforum you may want to look at.

You could get a second 4048 and add it to your system. Less money, twice the power. Like already mentioned many available on ebay, marketplace, and possibly craigslist.

Yes, a used 4048 of the same release and firmware level would be straight-forward.
If an 8048 could be had for a good price; it as a drop-in replacement, or added in parallel with the existing 4048 (same release and firmware).
