Mate firmware bug, shows wrong fx error message, high battery voltage instead of shorted output

Post by bushytails »

My slave GVFX3524 shut down today, with the Mate, 4.1.6, showing the error as high battery voltage. This made no sense, and I verified the voltage on the terminals of the inverter was good at 27.6V. I decided to ignore the error it gave and proceed as I normally do when it shuts down, which is normally low ac output or low battery, and started up the genny. Every few seconds the inverter would try to switch to the genny, buzz loudly, and disconnect maybe a quarter second later. This sure sounded like a shorted output to me, despite the error. The inverter powered up fine with the main breaker turned off, and buzzed and shut back down the instant I turned it on. Definitely a shorted output. I checked the serial data, and it gave the fx error as 64, which according to the Mate serial guide, is indeed shorted output. I did various other troubleshooting steps along the way, but that's the gist of it - I'm very sure battery voltage was not high, and fairly sure the output was shorted.

So, the Mate shows high battery voltage when the error is shorted output, despite giving the correct code over the serial port. I assume this is a bug in the Mate firmware? I can't really think of any other explanation.

I couldn't find anything about this googling or searching the forum, so I figure I'll post here in case anyone else runs into it, so they don't waste as much time trying to track down the wrong problem. Of course, now I need to go track down the right problem... the slave phase mostly only runs the two neighbors' houses, two sheds, and two trailers, and all of them say they haven't connected any new loads and weren't doing anything directly involving electricity when it shut down, but it's working now, so I have an intermittent short to find... yay.

Just curious. How are ultracapacitors integrated into the system?

You might try restarting or cycling the Mate, lifting/removing the RJ45 from the hub and then reinserting it.getaway shootout
You may then try toggling the DC breaker that restarts the Mate if that doesn't fix it.
