flexmax -80 lowering generator load

Post by purifiedlife »

We are offgrid and use a champion 3650 generator and it's inputting roughly 3000w. The generator is tired so I need to lower the load on the generator when charging the system. I want to lower the input to 2500-2800 because the generator keeps tripping only I can't figure out where in the inverter to do this. Thank you

Of course, the FlexMax80 charges the battery independently of the inverter charger, and has no bearing on the generator's operation.

The Schneider SW 4048 listed in your profile isn't Outback equipment, so you might find a more detailed answer to generator load management from a Schneider user forum (if such exists.)

A quick scan of the SW 4048 manual turned up two potential controls: AC IN Breaker and Load Shave. I have no experience with either, but AC IN Breaker looks like it may be set to a maximum AC Input value, and the inverter will lower charge current accordingly. Load Shave appears to be some form of overall AC load management that switches between charging and inverting when demand dictates.

The inverter charger also has a Max Chg Rate parameter which appears to set its charge current limit.

I install and maintain grid-tied and off-grid systems in my area and consult on solar system design/operation.

Given that the Schneider SW 4048 was a Xantrex SW 4048 and prior to that a Trace unit it does have some Outback heritage (Outback came out of Xantrex) and setting are relatively similar thru the lineage.
.
You have to get into the Basic Setup menu and change menu item 12E.
- Press Inv and Gen buttons simultaneously (this can be tricky depending on how sticky they are and coordinated you are)
- Scroll to Menu 12
- Scroll down to item 12E Max Charge Amps AC
- make the changes, probably 22A
- Scroll to Menu 14
- Push INV to save
