Integrating a Schneider Conext MPPT 80 alongside MX60

Post by Zip92 »

I'm looking for help or advice on how to have my Outback System show the charging statistics from a Conext MPPT 80 Charge Controller.
Why do I have a Conext MPPT 80 on my Outback system? Good question. This is what the guy sold me when I added a second solar panel grid.

SETUP DETAILS
Use: off grid use for remote cabin
CC1: MX60
CC2: Conext MPPT 80
INV1: VFX3524
INV2: VFX3524
COMM: Mate3s

Remote Monitoring: OpticsRE
Batteries: 12x2v Rolls AGM 24V Setup. Model S2-1275AGM
Solar Panels 1: 6x 250w on the MX60
Solar Panels 2: 12 x 250w on the Conext MPPT 80
Diesel Gen: 8kw Cummins with Atkinson Mini D GSCM

At the moment, the MATE3s only shows me the solar charge coming in from the MX60 and the Deisel Gen when it runs. I would like to have the MATE3s show the charge coming in from the 2nd solar panel grid being controlled through the Conext MPPT 80.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

There is no way to have the OPTICS RE show your non Outback charge controller data.
This is pain for users with mixed systems. Each company uses their own setup for monitoring.
You would be able to connect the CONEXT unit to the internet and monitor and possibly control like the outback does using a cloud based system.
It would be sweet to have the ability to mix and match equipment and have it all report to a single cloud based access point.
Good Luck with your system

Hi Adam,

If you add the FLEXnet DC battery monitor and up to 3 shunts you can get info on how many amps are going in/out of the battery bank and see it on OpticsRE. With a shunt dedicated to the Conext CC you can see how many amps it is providing. As far as I know, there is no program that monitors both Schneider and OutBack equipment at the same time. Otherwise, if you replace the MPPT 80 with an OutBack controller you can monitor it directly via OpticsRE. Do you have an especially long wire run for the new array that warranted the cost of a 600V charge controller? Your 3000 watt PV array would likely be better served by the OutBack FM100 with your 24V battery bank. 3000W/24V = 125A. In normal operation, I would expect 90-95A output so the 80A controller is probably clipping a lot of extra production.

At this point, the battery voltage in OpticsRE is your only baseline to see how the system is doing. Here is an article on battery voltage vs. State of Charge (SoC) while under load. This is a very basic guideline but it should help give a better idea of where your battery bank is at based on the voltage.

Thank you Kurt. Thank you JB.

Kurt, my run of wire (#10-3 teck cable) is about 250-275 feet. Is that considered "long"? I am contemplating swapping out the Schneider for the Outback FM100. On the FM100 webpage, it advises not to mix the FM100 with a FM60/80 on the same battery bank. We currently have the MX60 (which I think is the same as the FM60 now). Is this a concern?

Whats the DC voltage from the panels?
Depending on the string setup is what your DC voltage will be.
I am guessing that is what they went with the higer voltage unit?
Are the panels that run off the FM unit far away as well?

The OP has a bit similar to what was on the boat when I bought it.
The Schneider has it's own display but I have to go & look at it rather than just look at the Mate at the helm.
Works for me.

This application note may be helpful, although it does not address compatibility with the MX60. The MX60 is similar to the FM60 but it differs in that you can monitor, but not control its operation from the Mate(3s) - you can only control its settings locally on the MX60 keypad.

This may or may not be a deal breaker for you...Maybe someone else has experience mixing an MX60 with an FM100.

I have a MX60 and FM100 on my system. I am having problems with the FM100 cycling from silent, float, and bulk about every 10 minutes. If I remove the MX60 connection to the outback hub the cycling on the FM100 stops and it stays in Bulk. MX continues to work, but I can not see it at the Mate 3s due to my disconnect. Still trying to isolate the issue but it does work. I also have blue planet energy batteries (lithium ion) so most voltages in the controllers are set at 55.2v.
here is a picture showing the cycling.
Green is power into batteries. Spikes show FM100 cycling.
