Upcoming Forum Maintenance

Post by David LeBow »

Hello all,

Our web team is working to update the OutBack User Forum, porting it to a new hosting platform as well as adding proper security certificates.

The tech team is ready to do the shift Wednesday, November 11th.

In any event, should you find the forum unavailable within the next week, please check back 2-4 hours later and please, pardon our dust.

IMPORTANT: due to the way that passwords are encrypted within the underlying forum engine, after we switch to the new platform, you will need to create a new password! All the forum is likely to tell you is that your password isn't valid.

After the forum is moved, please change any forum shortcuts you have to https://forum.outbackpower.com instead of http://outbackpower.com/forum

It's all in the name of security, so please pardon the inconvenience.

Looks like you've come up against the disadvantage of hosting on the 'cloud' where a security cert is needed for each & every website and subdomain of that website.
Could be an expensive exercise seeing there are many subdomains.
Pity the 'boys' didn't just go with a normal hosting company that have free certificates included in the price and that certificate covers all subdomains.
Some of these traps could/should have been avoided by doing investigation or discussion with providers of services.
Keep at it!

I know, right? Myself, I didn't know we had a re-skin coming, so Cristian's my hero!

My German uncle, back in the day, used to complain that my handwritten letters were "pepper to his eyes" (my handwriting has always been appalling). I didn't realize until I saw this last night how much the old skin was pepper to my eyes.

"Pepper to my eyes" there is an excellent turn of a phrase. Useful in so many situations.

Rendering on mobile devices is still inconsistent on many platforms. Disconcerting given the number of mobile devices in use. (If I have to revert to a laptop or desktop, I'm already bi*ching about pepper, for real.)

Thanks guys in the back room, for skinning this cat.

Well done David and Cristian--forum looks great.

And I see SSL is now working correctly. Terrific. Good choice using Let's Encrypt for the certs, by the way. Great solution that saves money and works really well (I use them for all my client's certs).

Look forward to spending more time on the new forum. Thanks for following through on this, I know it's challenging when working within the constraints of a large corporation.

All credit goes to Cristian. I'm just the annoying whiner who kept poking people to push the process along.

Especially love the re-skin. I spend an inordinate amount of time here and it's so much improved. I'm still experiencing that same euphoria I had walking into the kitchen after finally repainting our 70's era dark-walnut kitchen cabinets.

Agree, much easier to read, easier on the eyes generally, and just feels a whole lot "cooler."

I'm sure Cristian knows this but you can use the "developer tools" feature in most any browser to test how the site performs on various devices including phones. I took a quick peek at iPhone 10 and it seemed usable but I didn't spend much time on it.

Believe it or not if you look at your stats. I bet close to half your users are on mobile.
