Off grid with generator

Post by Txeddie1111 »

I recently added a backup generator to my Radian (8048a) off grid system. the installer set it up in "mini grid" mode and a few days ago, we ran short on battery and the generator didn't start. nor when I manually started the generator did it power the house. It has been set up using the two wire auto start.

I suspect we have the settings wrong and wondered if I could get some help with the AGS settings.

many thanks!

I'm off grid, but don't use AGS.

Nonetheless, manual start should connect the generator and power house loads at the very least.

When the generator is started, look at the Mate. What is the LED on the AC INPUT key doing?

Making sure I follow correctly;
...leave everything as it is (powered by the battery/ solar) and simply manually start the generator and view the AC Input LED light.

I'll check this evening and respond. (Thank you for the reply!)

Yes, if the LED continually blinks, the generator isn't connected. If solid amber, its connected.

Good Morning (here in Navasota),

okay, last evening when I started the generator (20k Kohler), NO amber lights showing at all (no lights at all on the AC INPUT).

Below are pictures as labeled:

I don't use a Radian so am out of my lane here, but the AC Input (lower) line on the Mate is showing grid connection.

The radian has two AC inputs - Gen and Grid.

For an off grid installation, I'm not sure why Mini Grid would be selected as the Inverter operating mode.

Is the system strictly off grid?

It is totally off grid.

I'm going to first confirm the INPUT wiring is to the generator IN buss then set the system to off grid. Next I'm going into the generator settings and switch that to AGS.

On reading the manual, I believe that's the correct setting. It says once you do this, press the "ON" key and the generator should start verifying the two wire configuration is working.. Them press "AUTO" which puts it is AGS mode.

Then I have to test the auto start function; reading how to do that now...

OK. If strictly off grid, the "grid interactive" operating modes don't really apply, IME.

I have my inverter operating mode set to "Support".

You can certainly dive into AGS any time you want, but if the generator isn't performing properly with a manual start, it certainly won't operate any better with AGS start, and all the AGS setting debugging will only add to the confusion.

Confirm which AC Input terminals the generator is physically wired to, and that input is selected. Also, check the (Generator) AC Input and Current Limit settings to make sure they are proper. Check the charger AC Input and Current Limit settings as well.

Makes sense;

I'll check the items you note.

Thanks for keeping me out of the weeds.
