Wire size for DC breaker

Post by webpaul »

I have some Outback 60 amp DC breakers and I want to connect them to my Flexmax 60, which the manual recommends AWG 4 wires. The hole to the 60 amp DC breaker is quite small though, maybe AWG 8 - do I just trim off some of the copper to get it in there or am I missing something?

Is this a panel mount breaker or a din mount breaker?

Din mount - I just jammed it in there best I could, most of it fit in. I used 4awg wire which mostly works but I don't think I could use anything bigger than that without doing something different or just trimming down the amount of copper at the end.

Seems like a poor idea though. Why not get bigger breakers? or check to see if you could have lived with smaller wire?

The Outback DIN rail breakers are rated for wire sizes from 14 to 2 AWG. 4 AWG should fit easily. If you have large wire, splice a short (6" to 12") piece of 4 AWG to the end of it before connecting to the breaker.
