Flexware Surge Protector issue

Post by tjdadj »

Not sure this is the correct area for this, but here goes:

Last Dec. I was realized that I was in need of surge protection for my FW500 system, which I purchased in June '07. I found that Outback made very practical surge protector, the FW-SP-ACA. which came with an FW-ACA, which I already had. Not wanting to pay for another pair of ACA's, I called Outback tech support, and after finally getting thru to them why I didn't want to buy another yet another pair of $45 FW-ACA's, they said that I could buy the replacement board only, and mount it in my existing ACA's.

To make a long story short, I finally received my FW-SP-R's, BUT when I went to mount them in my system, I found out that there are apparently 2 different sizes of ACA's, and the surge protectors don't fit in the ones I have, as they are not deep enough.

So, Outback, what's the story on these, and why isn't there a differentiation in the 2 different styles of ACAs??

Simple product evolution, the original ACA was morphed into the FW-ACA to make space for the surge protector.

Kent,

I was hoping for an official Outback response, but probably not..

Are you saying that ALL FW-ACA's work with the surge protector? :???:

Forgetting the fact that my ACA's were in boxes marked as FW-ACA's, If I order a pair of FW-ACA's again, will I receive the correct ones??

TIA..

Terry,

Outback's current price list doesn't even include the original ACA. Since the new ones are backwards compatible, I doubt that the original ones are being made any more. But there are probably more of the old ones in dealer inventory. I don't know if your dealer repackaged them or if it was a factory mis-package but I'd try to get your dealer to straighten it out. If your receipt shows that you purchased a FW-ACA, your dealer owes you a correction!

But... from a parts management stand point apples should not suddenly become oranges...

In fact the short ACA is called the FX-ACA and the deep ACA is called FW-ACA

1. FX-ACA: Outback FX-ACA AC Wiring extension (old style and still in stock everywhere, I guess), List Price $45.00
2. FW-ACA: Deep ACA adapter FW-ACA designed for use with SP-R (surge protection circuit board sold separtely), List Price $45.00
3. FW-SP-ACA: FLEXware Surge Protection FW-SP-ACA for FW500 & FW1000 systems, List Price $259.00
4. FW-SP-R: Replacement surge protection circuit board FW-SP-R, List Price $209.00

I hope this helps...

Thanks

That would be great if they were still in business! I rechecked my invoice and I was billed for FW-ACA's, not FX-ACA's

Thank you for the clarification! Now I can at least order the correct parts and expect to get the right items..
I am working with a new dealer now, I just hate having to buy those overvalued items again.. At least with the DCA, you get a nice cast metal piece.

thanks guys, I really appreciate the info..

Tjadadj,

Yes unfortunately we did have to change the FX-ACA into the FW-ACA when we incorporated the Surge Protector in it. The new FW-ACA is a bit wider, and about 3 inches longer than the FX-ACA.

Please expect an email from Matt James in the next couple of days.

FOLLOWUP

Just wanted to let everyone know that Outback came thru and sent me the correct FW-ACA enclosures, which I have received and installed.

Outback did this even though it was determined to probably be a dealer issue, and I really appreciate it.

As a way to pass on the good will, I have (2) slightly used FX-ACA's, that I will pass on to whomever is willing to pay the shipping costs.

Obviously, this is a first come, first serve opportunity, so please contact me off-forum if you are interested.

Please respect others and this offer and only ask for what you need. ie If you only need one, don't request both of them. [-X

Thanks again Outback.
