Max power output from Generator

Post by MikeyTeach »

Hi,
I have a VFX 3024E and I am thinking of changing my 5kw generator for a bigger more powerful generator (15kw).Is there a maximum power of generator I can connect to my system for battery charging or heavy AC loads etc?

Thanks

You have a 24V system in the house and a 12V system in the garden, right?
1. Is the generator used for battery charging in both systems?
2. At the same time?

Hi,
Yes, I plan to charge both systems at the same time.
Plus run extra loads in the house, like dish washer, also at the same time as charging.

Cheers

Each inverter will have limits which you can find in the specs. Here are a few that seem most relevant to your question:

Max. Continuous AC Output Current
Max. AC Input Current
Max. Battery Charging -- AC amps, DC amps, and Power in volt-amps.

When passing AC from the generator through the inverter/charger to run loads and charge batteries, those values must not be exceeded. However, the output capability of the generator is irrelevant. A 15kW generator can be fired up to run a single 9W LED light bulb -- efficiency will suffer, of course.

In the case of battery charging, obviously the battery specs need to be met also -- optimum and max. charging current, plus other settings.

Others here could flesh in the details better than I. My gennie is 3kW @120V -- 15kW at 230VAC is out of my league  .

30 amps AC IN is the maximum for the FX & VFX Export models.

I know nothing about Trace inverters, but if the Trace is in the same ballpark, 60A x 230VAC = 13.8kW, so a 15kW might be right, if you could really make use of that much.

I upgraded my generator to a 5kw magnum last winter. I spoke to my solar guy who said I shouldn't change any parameters in my outback or inverter. I have a 48v system. We have been struggling for months with low power in the morning. We checked the battery bank when it first started, everything seemed fine. We are planning on shutting down the breakers to the panel to see if that helps overnight. On another note, when we charge with genie, the out power always reads 50.0 when it was charged to 58.2 or higher, why does it do that?

Post some more details of your system in your profile, especially details on batteries including age, location and solar panels. I am not familiar with the Magnum 5kW generator, please provide a link to the specs.

Your Xantrex SW Plus 5548 and Outback FM80 is similar to a system I inherited. When you say power reads 50.0 vs 58.8, I assume you are referring to the Xantrex menu item 4a or 4b for battery voltage (4a is actual, 4b is temp compensated).

If you are not getting above 50.0V with the generator now, was the generator able to charge the batteries correctly in the past? If it worked in the past, the wiring is likely correct. The SW Plus 5548 is a single phase system. Some details on how the Magnum 5kW is wired into the system would be useful. Pictures can help. You should verify that you have generator voltage at the 5548. Maybe a breaker is tripped. You can also verify by observing the AC1 or AC2 LEDs and make sure that it is solid green.

On a sunny day, can the FM80 get the batteries up to the absorb voltage? If, not there is a good probability your batteries are in need of replacement.
