Re: Parallel skyboxes

mhspohr, I was informed a couple weeks ago that it would be quite awhile before there's a new version of firmware, due to the release of the new version of the Radian. It's taken a considerable amount of trial/error testing, but I'm quite happy with my current configuration. Let me know when you're ...

Re: Parallel skyboxes

mhspohr,

Just curious what you ended up doing with your configuration. Looks like you may have gotten busy doing other non Skybox things. - Steve

Re: Calling all Multi Skybox users, External CTs and battery discharge

Xeroiv, Four Skyboxes must mean that you either need to replace a lot of power, ensuring that you have enough power over the winter, selling the power and SRECs, or something I haven't thought about. I completely failed to ask how much power you need on a daily basis, and what the peak loads look li...

Re: Calling all Multi Skybox users, External CTs and battery discharge

Xeroiv, It should be pointed out that Outback does not support the way I'm using the Skyboxes, but I have mentioned repeatedly that until they 'solve' the blackout situation when one needs to reboot a single system, I'll need to continue operating using my own, partially redundant system. Things hav...

Re: battery questions with Skybox.

DForester, I'm going to assume that all Daly BMSs work the same way. I did NOT even get a manual, but the person I bought from installed the ground and the first 3 leads so that I understood what needed to be done. Ground goes on the bottom ground. The pin right next to it goes to the positive termi...

Re: battery questions with Skybox.

DForester, It's REALLY important that you get your lead order correct when attaching to cells. If you make a mistake, you'll burn up the BMS. The guy I bought the batteries from has done this by accident, and it fried the system in seconds. Double check, then confirm voltages to Skybox are correct b...

Re: battery questions with Skybox.

Dforster, I mostly agree with everything raysun says in his reply. I have 2 Skyboxes with different sized battery arrays on each Skybox, growing monthly. Do a little homework online and you'll see that you're really asking for trouble if you don't use a BMS. It provides a LOT of benefit, including s...

Re: Can Skybox support main panel loads without export?

Mike, Here's a clip from an article that does a pretty good explaining it: " If you're in California & interested in solar energy, you've probably heard the term NEM 2.0. It stands for Net Metering 2.0, and it refers to the policy on how power utilities can buy and sell energy from solar cu...

Re: Can Skybox support main panel loads without export?

Dforster, it's not so much about zeroing the grid when I produce excess energy. It's about zeroing the grid once the PV can't cover my house load, and the batteries need to cover that load. Without CTs, not really possible. At the moment (9:40pm), my batteries are discharging just the right amount t...

Re: Can Skybox support main panel loads without export?

Mike, "that the purpose of external CTs is to allow support of main panel loads when selling to grid is prohibited, as in self-consumption or non-export mode." I think you mean Non-Export and Maximum Independence. I use Self-Consumption, and can export at will. CTs are VERY useful if one d...

Re: Calling all Multi Skybox users, External CTs and battery discharge

Brian_B, Yesterday I finally implemented your suggestion of using a CT series connection between both Skyboxes. Although the systems haven't been running even 24 hours in this new configuration, the system is behaving quite well. Gridzero for my system has never been tighter. I"ll run it for a ...

Re: Parallel skyboxes

@Raysun nailed it. DEFINING what you want the system to do FIRST is critical. Implementation can only be done after the definition is in place. Sometimes, changeing hardware implementation is necessary to achieve the goal. Let's use me as an example: Goal: Generate as much power as possible (solar),...

Re: Parallel skyboxes

Mark, We need to have a good look at your systems. When I looked at your configuration, it looks like you're not using any external CTs yet. Do you have loads hooked up to the LOAD breaker on either of your boxes? Are your systems connected to the same panel? CTs made a HUGE difference, since they k...

Re: Calling all Multi Skybox users, External CTs and battery discharge

Everyone, Thanks for all the thoughtful responses. Over the past couple of weeks, I've learned that using CT for L1 on Sky 1 and CT for L2 on Sky 2 has worked quite well. The only time both batteries discharge at the same time is when PV doesn't quite cover the load in the late afternoon. Once a sig...

Re: Parallel skyboxes

Mark, "Do you have them set up as 2 Skyboxes with both as "leader" or are they set up independently?" YES. They are set up independently...meaning, they are side by side, have their own battery, their own strings of solar, AND their own network connection as well as an ASSIGNED I...

Re: Calling all Multi Skybox users, External CTs and battery discharge

Solutions found tonight: To turn off "Absorb": Edit the Absorb Time beneath the battery tile to a time less than the current "remaining run time". It was at 00:01:49, so I changed the absorb time to 00:01:00, and after applying, the Charger Status indicated "Charger Off"...

Calling all Multi Skybox users, External CTs and battery discharge

Everyone, It's been more than a month now that I've been working with a pair of Skyboxes, running external CTs, and WISHING that both Skyboxes would 'help' share the grid load our complex has been using. Unfortunately, regardless of configuration, (at least until now), I have been unsuccessful getti...

Re: Parallel skyboxes

Mark, Try to remember what I wrote....that Radians and previous models were designed to minimize overhead, ie, not running any more systems than necessary. Since you were only pulling 2-3kW, a single system could handle that. Get it? Since I'm not an advocate of this method, it's one of the handful ...

I have created a new topic, both discussing my next plan of attack to deal with partial battery charging, as well as asking for configuration information from other Multi Skybox users.

Here's the link to the new thread:

Re: Parallel skyboxes

Here's a snippet from information I provided in another thread: Oh, and if you haven't ordered the CTs from Outback yet, I might suggest you get these instead: https://aimdynamics.com/product/JC24F-mA/ They're only $30 ea (so you'll need 2 of them), and they can get them in the mail same day, or nex...

Re: Parallel skyboxes

mhspohr , I had a feeling that you might end up in the same situation as me. Before you abandon hope, try configuring both as leaders. This solves the redundancy problem (you can shut off each at will, and won't affect the other system). As for CTs, you could do the same as me, connecting one L1 CT ...

Re: Parallel skyboxes

Raysun, Probably the same thing. I've not done it since it does take a bit of work, moving CT connections, changing network order (cable length), and configuration changes. If you read up the forum a bit, you'll see that I have a post which talks about the history of Outback's product line. As menti...
